LORD SWINTON’S TASK
WAR EFFORT IN WEST AFRICA. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) RUGBY, June 17. Replying in the House of Commons to questions on the status of Lord Swinton, Minister of State in West Africa, Mr Attlee said his appointment was administrative and was intended to secure an effective war effort in West Africa. It involved no constitutional changes in the colonies, which remain under their own governors. Lord Swinton would hold Cabinet rank, but would not be a member of the War Cabinet. He would work in close co-operation with the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
