POWER EQUIPMENT

DOMINION-WIDE CENSUS BEING TAKEN. GENERATING PLANTS IMPRESSED. A complete census is being taken of all generating equipment, distribution transformers, etc., in New Zealand. Generating equipment includes mo-tor-generators and rotary converters. As regards transformers, overhead and underground cables, it is not necessary for electric supply authorities and electrical trading firms who furnish this information on their regular monthly returns to also comply with the requirements of the order. In connection with the generating sets owned and in active operation by electric supply authorities, the particulars of same are already known, and the return asked for need not include them, but any plant capable of being used, but not actually in service, must be notified. It is believed that there is a great untapped source of idle generating plant in freezing works, coal mines, sawmills, factories, gold mining claims, garages, etc., and possibly in pictura theatres, shops, hotels and large sheep stations, which have subsequently changed over to public supply. Inspectors of electric supply authorities who have knowledge of the whereabouts of such plants are asked to ensure that same are duly notified to the Electricity Controller. Under the new order every generating plant is now nominally impressed until the consent of the Electricity Controller is obtained for its removal. All concerned are asked to supply up-to-date lists. The demand for generating equipment of all types for Defence requirements is increasing rapidly, and it is expected that all electric supply authorities and trading firms will use their utmost endeavours to see that every generator in the country is located and listed in accordance with the requirement of the order.
