HOW MAORIS CAME SOUTH TO WAIRARAPA. ROTARY CLUB ADDRESS. An informative address on Kahungunu, the tribal name of the Maoris in the Hawke’s Bay-Wairarapa area was given at today’s luncheon of the Masterton Rotary Club by the Rev. H. Ta ep a. In the coming of the Maoris to New Zealand in the Great Migration, one of the seven canoes, which was captained by the father of Kahungunu, landed on the East Coast of the North Island and from that time Mr Taepa traced in an interesting way incidents which had a profound effect on Maori life. He showed how disputes over domestic affairs led to migration to other parts, these culminating in a movement south to the Wairarapa. Mr Taepa’s address was followed with interest and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
