WESTERN DEFENCES
NAZIS REVERSING MAGINOT LINE. NO BALLOONS FOR VICHY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 16. German nervousness over the possibility of an Allied offensive in the west is betrayed by the present feverish activities in France, details of which have reached the Free French headquarters in London. The Maginot Line is being reversed. A large number of workers is engaged in turning the guns westward, and new fortifications are being built on the Rhine. The German High Command has ordered the: establishment of special anticommando units, whose personnel is equipped for hand-to-hand fighting. They are stationed in various big ports, including St. Nazaire. At the same time, Laval’s policy of gradually imposing at least a semimilitary collaboration with the Nazis on the French people has borne its first fruits. The Vichy Government has been authorised by the. Armistice Commission to install anti-aircraft defences throughout the unoccupied zone, and also to put up barrage balloons round Vichy itself. The scheme’s one drawback is that Vichy has no balloons.
