CARTERTON

THE LOCAL BAND RE-UNION OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) A re-union of band members was held at the Bandroom, Carterton, last evening. The chief object of the gathering was to assist the new band which is being organised, under the leadership of Mr W. Spooner. At 8 o’clock the band, which contained among its number ten boys, rendered two selections which were very well played. Messrs W. B. Allen, Wilf. R. Harry and C. J. De Lacey commended Mr Spooner for his efforts in establishing the band which should soon be capable of giving a programme in public. At the conclusion of the gathering Mr H. T. Ray entertained those present with- a short moving picture programme. Supper was provided, after which Mr Harry thanked Mr'W. B. Allen (patron) for the keen interest he had always taken in band matters in Carterton. Mr Allen suitably replied. On leaving for his home the band accorded Mr Allen three cheers. A Severe Frost. Carterton experienced the heaviest frost of the year this morning. Water pipes in exposed positions in the borough were frozen. A “Parcel Evening.” On Monday evening at the Dalefield Hall, a “parcel evening” will be tendered Miss Joyce Nielsen in honour of her- approaching marriage. Music will be supplied by Mrs Ashton’s orchestra. Personal Items.

Mr R. Sayer, of Dalefield, left yesterday for Napier, where he will spend a short holiday. His son, Private V. Sayer, who has been on leave, has returned to camp. Private Bernard Benge, who has been on leave from military duties, returned to camp yesterday. Mrs Benge and her child have gone to Waikanae to live. In the war of 1914-18 the following members of the Carterton Druids’ lodge made the supreme sacrifice:— Lieut. C. E. Lee, M.C., Cpl. E. T. B. Wallis, Privates E. B. Attwood, E. A. Hawke, H. P. Hawke, F. W. Johnson, N. Johnson, R. F. Parker and L. Rosriter, Riflemen G. W. Blake. W. H. Hannah and P. W. Zillwood. Fifty-one members of the lodge served in the war. Pte. A. R. Tankersley, writing from Egypt on April 24 to a friend in Carterton, says that he is enjoying good health. He mentions having seen Pte. Basil Gayfer, who is in charge of an officers’ mess. Dance at Morison’s Bush. There was a large attendance at the Morison’s Bush Hall last evening, when the Morison Bush and Battersea War Service Committee held a dance, the funds from which are to be devoted to entertaining local soldiers. The music ' was provided by Tom Udy’s dance orchestra and the M.C. was Mr F. Snell. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Margaret O’Neale and Mr Steve Walsh. Supper was provided by a ladies’ committee. ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE MEETING. District President Bro. A. J. Dew presided over the meeting of Totara Lodge No. 3 held last night. Two declarations off the sick funds were received, after which the sum of £l2 3s 4d was passed for payment; £lO was also paid on account of the late wife of a member. The secretary reported that to date £l4 Os lid had been received from members in response to the lodge’s appeal to members for subscriptions to keep married members who are on active service, good on the medical list. Sincere regret was expressed at the death of Bro. Thos. R. McKenzie who was killed in an accident at Rangitumau last night, and a vote of condolence was passed with.the relatives. PATRIOTIC DANCE GATHERING AT PARKVALE. There was an excellent attendance at the fortnightly dance held in the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening, the proceeds from which will go towards the' patriotic funds. The music was supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra and much appreciated extras were played by Miss Ward and Airman Ray Ingley. Mr C. Jensen was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Pte. Snell and Miss A. Franks. Supper was provided. A competition for a ham was won by Mr W. F. Hooper. REGENT THEATRE STORY OF INTRIGUE. The programme tonight will be headed by the adventure-packed story of intrigue and rorhance, “They Met in Bombay.” It is a thrilling tale of India and China, in which Clark Gable, Rosalind Russell and Peter Lorre have the leading roles.
