Mr P. Doyle, of the Royal Navy, is on a visit to .Masterton. The Minister of Labour, Mr Webb, is expected to return to Wellington from the South Island tomorrow. Mr J. Murray has been appointed chairman of the Wellington branch of the Disabled Servicemen’s Re-estab-lishment League. The death occurred yesterday in Wellington of Mrs Ada Louisa Pearse, wife of the late Mr Harold Pearse, of Masterton. The interment will be private. Mrs E. G. Eton and Mrs F. Whitton, who were injured in a crossing accident in Masterton on June 4 are reported to be progressing satisfactorily under- the circumstances.

The acting Minister of Lands, Mr Barclay, is visiting the Bay of Plenty district on Lands Department business. He will visit Auckland before returning to Wellington on Thursday. L.W./M., P. M. (“Paddy”) Cross, son of Mr and Mrs C. Cross, Cornwall Street, Masterton, was a member of the crew of the boat which was torpedoed in Sydney Harbour by a Japanese submarine recently, but escaped without suffering injury. The death occurred on Saturday at his residence, Khandallah, of Mr James Gordon Smith, one of the directors of the firm of James Smith, Ltd., drapers, Wellington. The late Mi’ Smith, who was born in Wellington in 1875, was the second son of Mr James Smith, founder- of Te Aro House Drapery Company. .

There was a large attendance at the funeral on Saturday afternoon of the late Mrs C. H. Payne. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich officiated. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence, including one from Wairarapa Transport Ltd. Messrs C. and R. Wellington, J., C. J., and E. M. Wrigley and H. Candy were the pall-bearers. The death has occurred in Christchurch of Dr. John Guthrie, aged 65. Born at Akaroa, Dr. Guthrie began general practice in Lyttelton in 1907, removing to Christchurch in 1915, when he also became an honorary surgeon at the Christchurch Hospital, a post he held for many years. During the last war Dr. Guthrie served as a captain in the New Zealand Medical Corps. The funeral of the late Mrs W. E. Mercer . took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon. The service at the chapel and at the graveside was conducted by Mr R. H. Brewerton, assisted by Mr R. H. Russell, of the Ruhamah Brethren. Among the many wreaths was one from the members of the Ruhamah Gospel Brethren. The pall-bearers were Sergeant N. C. Gibson, Messrs R. H. Russell, L. Stevenson, B. Carpenter, G. Clarke and G. Dawson.
