NAZI DEBACLE
ON THE EASTERN FRONT MR J. L. GARVIN'S REVIEW. “SOLID & GIGANTIC” SOVIET RECOVERY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. January 4. Reviewing the success of the Soviet armies during the past week, Mr J. L. Garvin in the “Observer” says: “On the Kaluga sector in the Moscow region, one of the strongest German armies has suffered not only a defeat but a debacle, while Maloyaroslavets is another bastion wrested back by our Allies. “In the Crimea a most brilliant combined operation of the three arms planned by Stalin himself—a greater leader than Hitler—has enabled Russian landings from the Caucasus to recapture Kerch and Theodosia and to threaten the German position in the peninsula as a whole. Kerch is not only a bridgehead toward the Caucasus. It contains the richest iron fields in the Soviet Union. “We must omit other details of immense advantage along the whole front of over a thousand miles. This is no ephemeral effort on the part of our Soviet allies. It is a solid and gigantic recovery which strikes amazement and alarm into the very heart of Hitlerism.”
