BADLY MAULED
JAPANESE INVADERS AT CHANGSHA 50,000 KILLED OR WOUNDED FORCES IN FULL RETREAT. FOUR DIVISIONS TRAPPED IN POCKET. LONDON, January 5. In Central China the Japanese are being badly mauled at Changsha. Chungking estimates that the Japanese have lost over 50,000 killed or wounded since the attack on the city began. Four Japanese divisions defeated in the main battle are now trapped in a pocket north of the city. For four days the defenders held on grimly while the Japanese were fighting their way closer to Changsha. The enemy forces which were lately battering at the gates of the city are now in full retreat. About 200 miles east of Changsha, Chinese forces have gained local successes and have recaptured several towns. These stand north-west of Nanchang. It is announced in Canberra that Australian airmen, members of the International Air Force, are fighting in China.
