The late Mr Judd had resided in the Wairarapa all his life. He had been in failing health for some considerable time. Born at Greytown, he was the son of Mr John Judd, who arrived in New Zealand as a boy in 1840 in the ship Martha Ridgway. About 24 years later the family settled at Greytown, where they engaged in farming. Mr Judd, who was educated at the Greytown School, commenced his farming career on his father’s farm at Greytown. At the age of 27 years he took up a property of 640 acres at Mauriceville, later increasing his holding to 1750 acres, known as “Makarewa.” He married a daughter of Mr Thomas Cotter, of Silverstream, who had a farm of 800 acres which included the site of the present Silverstream College.

The late Mi’ Judd took a keen interest in the affairs of the district and had a long record of public service to his credit. For 28 years he served on the Mauriceville County Council, for the greater part of that period as chairman. He also had many years service on the Tararua Electric Power Board, and the District Highways Council and was also a member of the advisory committee for the Mauriceville Small Farm Scheme and a member of the Masterton Unemployment Relief Committee, the Ihuraua School Committee, the former Mauriceville Road Board, and an ex-member of the Waiohine River Boad. In the development of his property, “Makarewa,” he paid particular attention to afforestation, in which he took a keen and practical interest, planting about 6000 trees on his farm. Since his retirement from active farming, he had resided in Masterton. Mr Judd was a Justice of the Peace and was a life member of the Masterton A. and P. Association and of the Masterton Plunket Society. He was also a member of the Masterton Bowling Club. The late Mr Judd is survived by a widow, two daughters, Mrs George Wagg (Masterton) and Mrs Claude Hodgins (Opaki), and four grandchildren, to whom the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended in their bereavement.

The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the late residence, 23 Essex Street, following a service to be held at 3 p.m., for the Masterton Cemetery.
