ATTACKS BY DAY
MADE ON GERMANY & NORTH FRANCE BOMBING & MACHINE-GUNNING FROM LOW ALTITUDE. RAILWAY AND OTHER TARGETS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.25 p.m.) RUGBY, January 4. An Ail’ Ministry communique states: “Hampden aircraft of the Bomber Command were over North-West Germany in daylight on Sunday. Flying singly, . they attacked railway communications and other objectives, with bombs and machine-gun fire, .from a low altitude. “Fighters on patrol over Northern France attacked targets including the dock gates on a canal and German soldiers. “No aircraft are missing from these operations.” Two Australian pilots of the Fighter Command surprised German soldiers in a field in Northern France, ma-chine-gunned them and demolished a hut which formed their quarters. The two pilots then went on to attack locks used by the Germans. There was some slight opposition, including rifle fire, and one bullet richochetted on the wing of a Spitfire and hit the pilot’s windscreen, without doing any damage.
