LITTLE HOPE
OF THIS SEASON’S FRUIT BEING EXPORTED. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 17. “Very little,’’was the reply of the Minister of Marketing, Mr Barclay, today, when he was asked if there was any prospect of New Zealand-grown fruit being shipped to Great Britain this season. Shipping space was not available last season for the exportable surplus. The marketing of the fruit crop this season was being discussed with the industry, said Mr Barclay, and next week he would meet the Fruit Board to discuss the question of prices to be paid for fruit. Discussing the supply of fruit from the Islands, Mr Barclay said shipping was difficult, being very spasmodic and interrupted. There was a definite short crop of oranges in Australia, whence New Zealand drew its supplies at this time of year. “Efforts have been made to obtain supplies of oranges from Java, but th'e shipping position is difficult,” the Minister said.
