THEFT CHARGE
WOMAN CIVIL SERVANT CONCERNED NAME & EVIDENCE SUPPRESSED. AMOUNT OF £l2O INVOLVED. < Charged with the theft of £l2O from the New Zealand Government, a young woman civil servant was committed to the Supreme Court, Wellington, for sentence when she appeared before Messrs E. G. Eton and L. J. Taylor, J.’sP., in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court this morning. The Court ordered the suppression of the accused's name. Detective Sergeant W. Kane prosecuted and evidence was given by Messrs L. H. Power, enquiry officer, Wellington, and, A. G. Wiltshire, accountant, Masterton. Mr S. V. Gooding, who appeared for the accused, asked that her name be suppressed. “It is a very serious charge and the amount involved is substantial,” observed Mr Eton. “If the name is suppressed by this Court will it be suppressed in the Supreme Court?” Mr Gooding said that no harm could be z done by granting the request. The weman’s parents were very ill and did not know of the charge. Whether the name would be suppressed in the higher Court lay with the presiding jufge. “Considering the woman's age and the fact that my associate is in agreement, the name will be suppressed,” said Mr Eton. “For the direction of the Press all evidence which would disclose the identity of the accused is also suppressed.”
