GREYTOWN

PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE SOCIAL GATHERING. (“Times-Age” Special.) . The Greytown Citizens’ Patriotic Committee held a social gathering and dance in the. Odd Fellows Hall on Friday evening, when the guest of honour was Wireless Operator W. Jordan of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) extended best wishes from the citizens of Greytown to Mr Jordan. Mr Horton said that the New Zealand Force had already a wonderful tradition and was represented in the various war zones. Mr J. F. Thompson conveyed good wishes from the Greytown Defence Rifle Club of which Mr Jordan had been a member and Mr S. C. Shedden from the Greytown Returned Soldiers Association. On behalf of the committee Mrs Horton made a presentation of a writing case and diary to Mr Jordan and Mrs R. Beu, on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, presented Mr Jordan with a set of woollen comforts. Mr Jordan suitably replied. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mr Horton and Miss Boyce. Mr S. Shedden was M.C. and Te Tau’s Orchestra supplied the music for the dancing.

BOWLING CLUB

SHIELD AND CUP GAMES. In the games played at Greytown on Saturday afternoon, Greytown won two and Carterton one. Each scored a win in the Booth Cup, while the Greytown team won the Shield game. The results were as follows: Booth Cup—Callender, Harris, Thompson, Barber beat Brunton, Burns, Kenning, McLeod, 24/17; Smith, Simmonds, Tucker, Hart lost to Reid, Shedden, Kilgour, Higgison, 16/19. Shield: Daysh, Pankhurst, Larsen, Martin lost to Skeet, H. R. Feast, Kiernan, Dennes, 19/25. In the first progressive pairs tourney played at the weekend, the winning skip was N. McLeod (6 wins) and the successful lead E. Skeet (6 wins). The hidden number was won by J. Stringfellow. Detailed results: Skips, N. S. McLeod, 6 wins; G. Brunton, 5 wins; F. Dennes, S. Shedden, J. Damage by Gale. The heavy gale over the weekend considerably damaged the fruit crops. The stripping of the leaves from the fruit trees will naturally affect the crop. Plum trees seemed to have suffered most severely, the ground being covered with green fruit. Returned Soldiers’ Association. A meeting of the committee of the Grcyt'own branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held th the School House on Friday evening. Mr J. W. Herod (president) was in the chair and others present were: Messrs R. C. O’Neale, F. C. Clement, R. I. Dyson, S. C. Shedden and Miss L. Higginson. Apologies for absence were received on behalf of the secretary, Mr A. G. Nisbet, and Mr W. Hutchings. Arrangements were finalised for the annual children's Christmas party. It was reported that the number of financial members to date was 64.
