WOMEN’S HOSIERY

AN IMPROVED OUTLOOK. GOOD EFFORT BY N.Z. MILLS. (By Telegraph— Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., November 15. “In contacts with members of the Federation of Drapers, Clothiers, and Boot Retailers throughout the country I have ascertained that there is quite a substantial quantity of hosiery being offered by exporters in Great Britain and import licences are being granted,” stated the president of the federation, Mr W. M. Sexton, Palmerston North, in an interview. “While imports will not affect the position this side of Christmas,” he said, “the situation should certainly be greatly relieved by the end of January.” Mr Sexton, who has been in contact with the Government on the matter, added that in addition to imports the New Zealand mills are making a particularly good effort to give deliveries before Christmas. “While we do not wish to raise the hopes of the womenfolk unduly they can undoubtedly look forward to the coming winter with a certain amount of confidence as to securing supplies of hose,” he added. “The fact remains, however, that they will have to be content with fewer pairs than they would perhaps normally have, this beipg necessary to ensure that distribution shall be as equitable as possible.” In response to representations made by the federation the licensing authority has agreed to increase the licences for 1942 for children’s socks and girls’ gymnasium stockings to double the amount originally granted. This will give importers the same value in licences as that granted in 1940.
