A. & P. ASSOCIATION

GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING AT MASTERTON. GOVERNOR-GENERAL UNABLE TO VISIT SHOW. There was a good attendance of members at a meeting of the general committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association last night. The president, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee presided. A motion of condolence was passed with Mrs R. R. Burling in the death of her husband, who was a life member of the Association, and with the relatives of the late Mr John Cooper, who was killed in action. Members stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect. The military secretary wrote regretting that Ihe Governor-General and Lady Newall would be unable to attend the show owing to a prior engagement. Ho hoped to come at a later date. A letter was received from Mr F. G. Stowell, thanking the association and friends of the late Mr F. C. Stowell for donating a memorial cup in the freezing lamb classes. It was pointed out that this was for lambs under 36 lbs. and under 421bs. Members of Young Farmers’ Club could also compete for it in their class.

A letter was received from the Romney Marsh breeders urging their inspectors to inspect all rams sold at the fairs to see whether or not the rams reached such a standard as in their opinion was required for reproductive purposes; any rams unfit for this purpose to be rendered ineffective for breeding purposes. After a good deal of discussion it was decided to refer the letter to the Ram Fair Committee for a report.

The matter of ticks on sheep at the show getting on to rams using the pens on the following days was discussed. It was stated that there was a difficulty here in that most sheep came by lorry. They may have been clean when they left the farm and may have picked them up in the lorries from other sheep. It was decided that exhibitors be asked to see that their sheep were free from ticks and vermin before sending them to the show. This notice is to bo inserted in the schedule of classes. It was also decided to add a new class in the open Romney Marsh sheep for - a one-shear ram which must be sold at the Show Ram Fair. Judges in several of the classes were selected and are to be asked to act at the next show.
