DISTRICT MEETINGS GATHERING AT CARTERTON. COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Women's Institute was held in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, yesterday afternoon when the Garden Circle was in charge. Many'- beautiful flowers were on display. Mrs A. C. Knutson, convenor of the Garden Circle, was in the' chair, Mrs W. P. Williams taking over the duties of the secretary and Mrs G. Steffert those of treasurer. It was reported that all the basketware forwarded by the New Zealand Institute for the blind for sale at the recent Wairarapa Show had been disposed of and an amount of over £5O had been forwarded to the Institute as a result. Those who had helped were warmly thanked. The report by Mrs Pink of the Federation half-yearly council meeting held in Carterton was read and the members passed a vote of thanks to Mrs Pink for her report. Miss Wolters congratulated • Carterton on winning the competition at the meeting for the best three-minute report. Mrs Worsfold was in particularly fine voice in her rendering of two vocal solos. The accompanist was Miss V. Sorenson. Each received recognition of the pleasure given to the members by the presentation of shoulder sprays. Mr W. Marten gave an extremely interesting talk on “Native Flora of New Zealand.” He was listened to with close attention and at the conclusion was heartily aplauded and presented with a buttonhole. The competitions were well contested, the results being’ as follows: —Sultana cake: Mrs A. C. Hawke 1, Mrs S. Swan 2. Mrs W. Williams 3. The entries in this competition, over one dozen, were later forwarded to the Mission for Seamen for the cafeteria. Hand-made soldiers’ handkerchief from a flour bag: Mrs A. C. Knutson 1. Mrs W. Williams 2, Mrs S. Swan and Mrs J. McKenzie (equal) 3. Over 30 handkerchiefs were handed in and will be included in the soldiers’ parcels. Best bloom in garden: Miss Wolters 1, Mrs S. Swan 2, Mrs A. C. Knutson 3. The variety of decorated vases, bowls, presentation boxes of flowers, posies, baskets and shoulder spraysj the work of Garden Circle members, were of a particularly high standard and were much admired by those present. PARKVALE. Mrs D. N. Adams presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute. A dance held for raising funds for buying wool for soldiers going overseas was a great success and wool was distributed to members to knit into garments. Mrs Steffert gave an interesting demonstration on pewter work and she was accorded a vote of thanks. The monthly competition resulted as follows: Marble cake, seniors, Mrs L. Rayner 1, Mr C. Jensen 2, Mrs W. King 3. Flowers, Mrs M. McKinnon 1, Mrs L. Rayner 2. Juniors: Marble cake, Miss G. Lukies 1, Miss J. Warrington 2. Flowers: Miss H. McKinnon 1. Mrs A. Knutson anefl. Mrs Steffert judged the”competitions and were presented with a shoulder spray. The hostesses were Mesdames G. Hart, E. Martin and W. Hammond. KOPUARANGA. The monthly meeting of the Kopuaranga Women’s Institute was held in the local hall yesterday afternoon. The president (Mrs Jarrett) presided over a large attendance of members. ■ An apology for absence was received from Mrs O’Connor. Members signified their willingness to help with the various stalls at a shop day to be held in Masterton in March. A full account of the Wairarapa Federation half-yearly council meeting was given by Mrs W. J. Cottle. It was decided that a donation of 5s be sent to the Wairarapa Federation. Wool to be knitted into a pullover for the Merchant Navy was distributed to members. A successful “bring and buy” stall of Christmas novelties was held during the afternoon. The roll call, “A Sewing Hint,” was answered by all present. A box lecture on Christmas novelties proved most interesting. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Clarke and Brophy. It was decided to hold the next committee meeting at the residence of Mrs S. J. Clarke. The results of the competitions were as fololws: —Hot water bag cover: Miss M. Cottle'l, Miss M. Wright 2, Miss Dorreen 3. Best bloom: Mrs Wright 1, Mrs Jarrett 2, Mrs Reside 3.

The hostesses for January will be Misses Fenemor and Cottle.
