NO CLARIFICATION

OF JAPANESE POLICY QUESTION OF AMERICAN SHIPMENTS. OBSERVATIONS BY TOKIO SPOKESMAN. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) LONDON August 12. World interest continues to be focused in the Far East. There have been no major developments in the past 24 hours and no clarification of Japan’s policy. Japan is worried about United States shipments to Vladivostok. The Cabinet spokesman, Mr Ishii, denied reports that Japan had warned the United States against sending war materials to Russia by this route. He remarked, however, that if the route were used a most embarrassing position would be created. He mentioned also the suspension of shipping between Japan and the United States, and expressed a desire for a readjustment of the situation. The Premier of Thailand, Luang Bipul Songgram, has given another warning that Thailand will resist invasion and brook no interference with her domestic policy. According to a Malay radio report, Chinese troops are ■ massing on the Indo-China border.

ALLEGED INTRIGUES. A message from Pnom-Penh, in Indo-China, reports General Kobayashi, commanding the Japanese forces in Indo-China, as saying that a series of intrigues in the past few days had obliged Japan to take all the necessary measures to maintain her position in Indo-China. General Kobayashi declined to disclose the nature of the “intrigues” which, he said, had threatened IndoChina’s security. The United Press correspondent at Saigon reports that the bulk of the Japanese force in Indo-China has been stationed in Cambodia, which is in the west of the country, and that only small detachments are in the vicinity cf Saigon. The Associated Press Bureau at

Bangkok says that two Axis shins, one German, the other Italian, which have been seeking refuge in Thai waters since the outbreak of war, haVe departed under the cover of darkness.
