MANAWATU MEETING

CUP WON BY BELLE CANE. SIR BEAU SUCCESSFUL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., December 22. The double win of the stablemates Belle Cane and Sir Beau was the feature of the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting at Awapuni on Saturday. Belle Cane won the Manawatu Cup and Sir Beau the Fitzherbert Handicap. Both were very strong public fancies. Another stable double came home in the highweight and the hack sprint, wtjen Esperance Bay and Gemara scored. Gemara paid a long price, easily the best on a day of moderate dividends. The weather was very stormy early in the forenoon, a high westerly wind bringing up driving rain. It made the top of the going greasy and indeed treacherous for the first race or two, and it was clear that it affected the chances of several of the runners. Fortunately for the club the rain lifted after the first race, but throughout the day conditions were boisterous and visibility poor, though there was a gradual improvement all the time. Early morning conditions, however, were such that it kept many patrons away, and the crowd was not up to what a Saturday attendance can be on a fine day. This was reflected in the returns on the machine, the total of £27,174 10s. for the day being a decrease of £8790 10s. on the Saturday last year. Results: — Maiden Plate, weight 8.7.
