The Hastings Stakes at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday was won easily by Saint Tor, full brother to Saxon Tor. Tetratina and Saint Tor quickly opened up a big break on the field, and had the race to themselves. Saint Tor soon ran Tetratina down, and won by five lengths. Erin’s Court, who was third, was three lengths further back, and there was another gap to Varuna, who just beat Flying Spray. Like his brother, Saint Tor is very speedy, and will be a bigger horse when he develops. Storeman In Camp. The former trainer 11. Pritchard is now working as a storeman in the camp at Trentham.

Sea Link in Great Order. Sea Link worked at Hawera yesterday over a round at solid pace and sprinted the last three furlongs without being bustled in 40. She is in great order and will sport silk next at Stratford. A Slow Run Race. The Spring Handicap at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday was run at a slow pace for nearly a mile, Hunting Cat and Gay Mimic making the pace for the other two runners. " Gay Mimic had Hunting Cat beaten at the distance, but Master Cyklon came on and won easily by a length from Aurora’s Star, who put in a very belated claim on the outside. Royal Descent Dead. The three-year-old Royal Descent died on the property of his owner, Mr A. J. McGovern, at Te Awamutu a few days ago. By Bulandshar from The Begum, Royal Descent was a full-brother to Arvakur and a half-brother to High Caste, Mazir and Stretto. He showed very promising form when he won the Midsummer Handicap at Ellerslie on January 1, but became affected in the wind and was sent out for a spell with a view to being operated upon later for the trouble. Successful Owner-trainers. Owner-trainers, including three women, were much in evidence with winning horses at the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s meeting, and one, Mr P. A. Sweeney, was the only trainer to score more than one success, being represented by Foxmund and Volifox. Others to return winners were Mrs F. Wackrow (Miss Te Koura), Mrs E. M. Sloane (Gold Spot), Mrs F. M. Reilly (Cappy), Messrs M. Marinovich (Hunting Bee), R. Douglas (Gar Vaals) and G. Cobb (Duvach). Hearth. Hearth, winner of both sprint races at Geraldine, is engaged in the six furlongs Air Force and mile October Handicaps on the first day at Dunedin. She is also a New Zealand Cup candidate, being on the minimum with 7st. She is trained at Mosgiel by her owner, Mr D. P. Wilson, and if he has any ideas about the feature Riccarton race this yeai- the mile race may be chosen for her. Stiff Task for Capricious. Capricious never succeeded in running out of hack class and,-while she has failed to win a race in open company, her place form has kept her climbing in the handicaps. She is ratesl as the best horse in the Churchill Handicap, principal distance race on -the first day of the Dunedin meeting, being the topweight with 9st. With the exception of Glenora Boy, which has yet to win a race in the Dominion, every other horse in the field has been successful in at least one open class race. Some of them have won several open class middle distance races. Capricious is trained by F. Roberts for Mr H. D. Greenwood, and her earnings last season were £875, the] result of eight seconds and two thirds in seventeen starts. Her placings included seconds in the New Zealand and Dunedin Cups and a third in the Metropolitan Handicap. Capricious comes to hand quickly and recent track form suggests that she is n'ot far off her best. In the New Zealand Cup she has 7.9, or 51b. more than she carried into second place last year.
