RUGBY FOOTBALL BUSH SEASON OPENED. ("Times-Age" Special.) The Bush Rugby Union opened its 1940 season on Saturday in good weather. Six teams are contesting the senior division, and a similar number in the third grade section. The following are the results:— Senior Grade. , Konini 15, Nireaha nil. Hamua 14, Pahiatua 6. Woodville 27, Mangatainoka nil. Third Grade. Eketahuna 8, Mangatainoka 5. Hukanui 12, Athletic 11. Pahiatua 11, Woodville 8. Third Grade. The Eketahuna third grade team played last year’s champions on their home ground and emerged victors by 8 points to 5 points. The win of the Eketahuna team surprised their supporters. The Mangatainoka team was slightly heavier than Eketahuna. Both teams played football of an interesting character. Mr B. Harvey is to be congratulated on his excellent control of the game. The first spell found both sets of forwards playing solidly, and towards the end the local forwards proved the better of the two packs. Five minutes before half time Ryan, H. Steer, Evans and W. Olsen broke through with the ball and Evans scored. H. Steer failed with the kick at goal. From the drop out a local combined movement resulted in Morrison scoring a nice try near the corner flag. Steer converted with a great kick.

The second spell proved to be much harder and faster than the first. Mangatainoka scored a try as the result of a bad mistake made by a player who kicked the ball into play instead of forcing down. The try was converted. In the closing stages of the game Eketahuna had Mangatainoka stubbornly defending. LABOUR PARTY MONTHLY MEETING. Mr G. A.
