His Majesty has sent the following message to Mr. Chamberlain: “In spite of our hopes and endeavours we have been compelled to resort to war. In this grave crisis in the country’s fortunes, I wish to recognise the unremitting efforts of members of my Civil Service, at Home and overseas, through the troubled years' behind, both in promoting peace and in preparing the country for the emergency now confronting us. Your work, which has earned the gratitude of your fellow-citizens, will, I know, be carried on in the'same spirit until peace is restored.” . ..
