OPPOSITION SUPPORT FOR GOVERNMENT IN UNIMPEDED WAR EFFORT. BASIS OF NATIONAL DUTY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “The Opposition endorse the Government’s actions in taking a stand by the side of the Mother Country in the declaration of war against aggression,” said the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Hamilton, in a statement issued last night after a caucus of members of his party yesterday. “The Opposition will continue'to give its help and co-opera-tion in the Government’s efforts to attain the objective sought—the winning of the war. This is the hour, to remember the slogan which fired the patriotism of the men and women of this country 25 years ago—‘To the last man and the last shilling.’ ”

“The Government asked for a week’s adjournment to allow them to review the situation and draw up proposals for future action,” Mr Hamilton continued. “In this we readily acquiesced. It is understood that during the adjournment the Government will decide on legislative and administrative requirements to meet the new obligations into which we have entered.

“Many people will find this time of waiting irksome and anxious and will want to know what is expected of them. It is clearly the occasion for generous help and much sacrifice on the part of all citizens. Each in his own way can serve whether it be in personal service or in contribution. “There is much work to be done and people individually and collectively can help in conserving the nation’s resources. We urge our people to action in taking their full part ip building up our military units and our essential food requirements both for this country and for the armies and peoples of Britain and her Allies. Each and all can make an immediate contribution to the country’s needs. This is the basis of national duty. “In this spirit and in these terms the Opposition is asking the National Party to direct its efforts.”
