FIFTY-SECOND ANNUAL REPORT

ACTIVITIES REVIEWED

SURPLUS OF OVER £B2 ON YEAR’S

WORKING.

The fifty-second annual report of the Masterton A. and P. Association, to be presented at the annual meeting of members on Wednesday. August 9. states: —

"Annual Show. —This was held on February 14 and 15, 1939. and was a financial success, the profit being £77 5s lOd. compared with £llB 15s 8d last year. The dry season had the effect of lessoning the entries in fat sheep and dairy cattle classes. The entries totalled 2636,' compared with 2383 last year, the chief increases being in the home industries classes. The Gover-nor-General attended the show on the second day. and was impressed with the exhibits and grounds. He was entertained at luncheon by officers of the association, past presidents, and some members of the Masterton Club, where the function was held.

"Ram Fair. —This gave a profit of £136 Is Id, compared with £124 6s Id. "Farm Account. —The profit here is £8 0s 4d. The ewes were bought last year at 30s, and written down to 20s and this accounts for the small profit. The profit last *year was £9l 13s sd. "Membership—Subscriptions collected amounted to £846 10s, compared with £863 5s 6d. The membership stands at 1033, compared with 1026. During the year 46 members were elected, 18 resigned. 6 have gone and loft no address, and 15 have died. "Golf'Links.—The receipts here were £73, compared with £75 12s. The grounds are still popular with golfers.

"Weight Judging—Receipts totalled £46, compared with £36 7s. We again wish to thank those members of the Savage Club for their very good work on this competition.

“Working Bee.—During the year a small working bee did some more painting. and we are grateful to those members for their good work. "Maintenance.—This cost £79 16s 6d. compared with £251 2s 7d last year. “Improvements. —The balance owing on the ground lighting was paid ofl from the Post Office Savings Bank Account. New gates at the main entrance were also put up, and add to the appearance of the grounds. A new road was also put down from York Street as far as the old avenue of trees, and should do away with the dust nuisance. Most of the money for the gates was donated by members.

"Night Show.—This was again held on the first night of the show, and was largely attended, the profit being included in the show profit. “Luncheons.—The loss here is £B7 9s lOd compared with £76 16s lid. “Ball. —This shows a profit of £BB 16s 3d, compared with £67 4s 4d lasi year. The ball is a very populai event.

"Mortgage.—This stands at £1250. the same as last year. "Car.—-The cost of running the secretary's car was £l4 14s, compared with £23 6s last year.

“Balance Sheet—After writing of! £195 6s 5d as depreciation, there is a surplus for the year of £B2 17s lid, compared with a loss of £63 6s 3d last year. The accumulated fund now stands at £6867 19s 6d. "Poultry Pens.—Some more pens are to be added in the coming year. This work will be carried out by Mi- W. Harding and his poultry committeemen. We should soon be in the position of having all our own poultry pens. "Coloured Lights.—We again desire to thank the Mayor and Councillors for their kindness in allowing these to remain up in the main streets until after the show.

"Obituary. —The committee records with deep regret the deaths of the following members: —Messrs J. T. Dagg, J. G. McDonald, C. Kebbell, J. C. Smith. B. A. Tomlinson, J. H. Cameron, H. T. Hume, J. P. Lett, Jas. Watson. Jas. Walker. C. Matthews, C. E. Daniell, Q. Donald, the Hon. A. D. McLeod, and Mr J. B. Keith, auditor for many years. The late Mr Quentin Donald served on practically all committees, and was president from 1915 to 1917. In each case suitable reference has been made in the records of the association, ano, a letter of sympathy forwarded to their relatives.

"Thanks.-—Our thanks are due to the Press for liberal publicity at all times, to the police and traffic inspectors for their able control of the motor traffic at the show, to the Railways Department, to the Plunket Society, the stock receiving stewards, to all stewards, including the lady stewards, for their splendid work in doubling the entries in home industries, to judges, ambu ■ lance, both women and men’s divisions, and to all those who in any way assisted at the show or during the year. "Retirements from Committee. —The following are not seeking re-election: Messrs P. M. Compton and D. S. McKenzie. We desire to thank them foi their past valuable help and intercs! in the association.”
