Much enthusiasm is being shown in the queen contest and the supporters of the respective candidates are working hard to ensure the success of their representative. Weather Conditions. Conditions were delightful on Friday and Saturday but towards evening a sudden change was experienced. Vivid flashes of lightning were the forerunner of a southerly storm. Frequent heavy falls of hail and sleet raged throughout the night and Monday. The snow on the high hills, which wore well covered as the result of the last storm, quickly disappeared under the influence of the beautiful sunshine, but the hills are now again covered with a thick mantle of snow. The atmosphere is very cold. Fortunately the lambing season does not commence in this district until August. Opossum trappers who are camped on the high levels are experiencing a strenuous time as the result of the severe storms of the past week. In some cases trappers have been completely snowed in. As a result of the sudden changes in atmospheric conditions there is an epidemic of colds in this locality. Land Proposal. A meeting of native owners interested in a large block of land in ihc Waikato district was held here on Sunday to consider a - suggestion made at a recent meeting in Greytown. It was generally agreed that the proposal if carried out would, with certain provisions, be favourably considered, and it was agreed to defer the matter until an application has been made to the proper authorities. A member of the Renovation Committee, who was present at the meeting at Greytown, outlined the suggested proposal. Euchre Party and Dance. There was a large attendance at the euchre party and dance held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday evening. The prizes were won by Mrs Spicer and Mr A. Manihera. The consolation prizes were won by Mrs Priest and Mr Cherry. The dance music was supplied by a local band.
