“N.Z. RAILWAYS MAGAZINE”
- AUGUST ISSUE
“There is a sharp difference of opinion as to the most useful invention ever produced. Some hand it to the wheel; others favour the bottle. Certainly both have served to make the world go round. It is to be hoped that the invention of the gun will not make it go “fiat,” remarks K. Alexander in “Adventures in Invention,” in the August issue of the “New Zealand Railways Magazine.” Dr G. Scholefield in “Edgar Wallace in Wellington” shows how the famous “merchant of mysteries” was a great-grandson of James Henry Marriott, who arrived in Wellington in 1842. O. N. Gillespie’s sixth big feature on New Zealand’s industries gives impressive evidence of the remarkable development in the manufacture of women’s overwear. H. Beattie has a very readable chronicle of the old-time Maoris’ skill in bushcraft and signalling. Many New Zealanders will see much to interest them in M. G. McNeil’s review of a big Maori conference at Auckland. Joyce West in "Pageant of Colour” gives a very pleasant picture of Tauranga in autumn with its glowing groves of oranges and lemons and its purple vineyards. N. R. Lewers does justice to the new scenic highway, the Lewis Pass Route, between Canterbury and Westland. There are about sixty illustrations.
