A BRILLIANT WIN

REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY

WAIRARAPA BEAT MANAWATU.

FAST AND SPECTACULAR GAME

On Saturday the Wairarapa representative team easily defeated the Manawatu representatives in a fast and spectacular game played at Palmerston North. Wairarapa were definitely superior on the day and had Manawatu beaten after the first ten minutes of play. The first, spell ended with Wairarapa leading by 5/0. Manawatu showed up better for a time in the second spell but could only score once against the good defence of the Wairarapa backs. After that Wairarapa took control and added a further three goals to their tally, making the final score Wairararapa 8. Manawatu 1. It was a brilliant win.

The Wairarapa team put up an excellent display and overshadowed Manawatu in all departments of the game. The forwards showed speed and accuracy in passing with every player in his right place. The half line was good and seldom gave the Manawatu forwards any time to get under way. Worsfold was at his best and led his team with confidence. Kay and Dick gave great displays as fuli backs, while Tildesley seldom had to stop anything very dangerous in the net.

The Wairarapa goals were shared by A. and S. Fisher and D. Jackson, while Worsfold won two penalty bullies. The game was a good try-out for Wairarapa who next Saturday will meet Nelson for the Nordon Cup. If they can produce Saturday's form Wairarapa is sure to fully extend Nelson. B GRADE GAME WIN FOR MANAWATU. Playing on the same grounds the Wairarapa B representatives were defeated by Manawatu B by 3 goals to 1 after a very evenly contested game. Manawatu was superior in the circle and this gave them the advantage of a 2/nil score at half time. Manawatu increased their lead early in the second spell to 3/0. A change was then made in the Wairarapa team, R. Clarke going up from full back to the forwards. This, made all the difference and Wairarapa kept up a strong attack. However, with the exception of a hot goal by Clarke Wairarapa were unable to reduce the lead and the game ended Manawatu 3, Wairarapa 1. Before returning home the Wairararapa teams were entertained at tea by the Manawatu Hockey Association when a number of toasts were honoured.
