MEETING OF COUNCIL

ALLOCATION OF TRAFFIC FEES.

LIGHTS ON BRIDGE WORK

The monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held at Martinborough today. Those present were the chairman (Mr A. B. Martin) and Councillors R. W. Matthews. Q. Donald. R. Smith. L. J. Thompson, J. McLeod and J. C. Bidwill. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of, the late Mr C. Matthews, whoso brother is ;■ member of the council. Advice was received from Earthworks Ltd.; that it was anticipated that work in connection with the Fea-therston-Longwood water race would commence within a month. The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) wrote drawing attention to the notice in the New Zealand Gazette fixing Wednesday. August 2 as this year’s observance of Arbor Day. and requesting that the count} again organise a suitable celebration. — Received.

The Masterton County Council forwarded a statement showing the amount of heavy traffic licence fees received by that county as the distributing authority for the number 10 Heavj traffic district. The amount allocated to the Featherston County for the 1937- period was £1291 and for the 1938- season £1384. The Masterton County Council also desired to know whether or not the Featherston Council was agreeable to.a continuation of the present agreement for a further period of 'two years. The council agreed to the allocation. The Automobile Association (Wairarapa) wrote drawing attention to the inefficient lights being used on bridge, construction in the county particularly on the Martinborough side. The letter pointed out that it had been reported that in some cases white lights only were being used, which could easily be mistaken for another vehicle. The engineer admitted that the lighting was not satisfactory and he was instructed to look for more suitable lights. The engineer reported that a number of the lights on various works had been stolen.

The New Zealand Institute of County Clerks advised that a general conference of County Clerks would be held at Wellington on July 25, and requested that authority be given to the Featherston County Clerk to attend. The request was granted. The ranger reported having impounded 16 head of stock and having registered 65 dogs. Fees collected amounted to £ll.

It was decided to endeavour to raise a loan of £lO,OOO to be used for sealed road improvements within the county generally.
