Mr R. H. Williams, secretary of the Masterton A. and P. Association has resumed his duties after his recent indisposition. Mr J. G. Chambers was entertained by a number of friends at Pahiatua on the occasion of his eighty-fourth birthday. Mr F. Milne, Masterton, who has been a patient of the Masterton Public Hospital where he underwent an operation returned to his home yesterday.

Captain B. C. B. Brooke, who, from 1933 to 1936 with the rank of commander, was naval officer in charge in H.M.S. Philomel at Auckland, has been appointed to command H.M.S. Bridgewater, an escort vessel on the Africa station.

It is reported, a New York cablegram states, that the famous pianist Ignaz Paderewski, who was obliged to cancel a concert in New York owing to a “slight indisposition,” was faced with a fatal heart attack, and was warned by his physician that he must cancel his tour.

Mr 'H. M. Patrick,, deputy-chief postmaster at Auckland, will vacate his position today. He has been transferred to the head office of the department in Wellington. His successoi’ as deputy-chief postmaster, Mr A. M. Rosie, has arrived at Auckland from Wellington. Mr F. R. Bodie, who was recently offered a short-service commission in the Royal Air Force, has decided not. to relinquish his local business associations and will, therefore, be remaining in Masterton. Mr Bodie is one of the most enterprising pilots of the Wairarapa Aero Club, and has many cross-country passenger flights to his credit. He is now studying for his B pilot’s license. Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand, will make his first visit to Christchurch next month. The mayor of Christchurch, Mr R. M. McFarlane, has been advised that Sir Harry hopes to be in Christchurch from the morning of June 13, till the morning of June 15. He will be the guest of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce at luncheon on June 14, when he will give an address. The death has occurred in Auckland of Mr William Crowley, aged 57, formerly a well-known railway officer. Mr Crowley was born in Te Awamutu, and joined the locomotive branch of the New Zealand railways in 1900. For- many years he was an express driver on the Main Trunk line. During the visit of the Duke of Windsor as Prince of Wales in 1920, and again during the visit of the King and Queen as the Duke and Duchess of. York in 1927, Mr Crowley drove the Royal trains in the Auckland district.

The appointment of Mr J. H. Kinnear as chairman of the Auckland Waterfront Control Boards was announced on Saturday. The board,, which was formed in April, after a waterfront conference called by the Minister of Labour, Mr Webb, elected Mr Kinnear unanimously. Under the constitution of the board, the chairman is required to be independently appointed. Mr Kinnear, who is a dental surgeon, is a member of the Auckland Harbour Board and the Auckland Hospital Board, and a member of the council of the Automobile Association (Auckland). The Pahiatua staff of the W.F.C.A. gathered in the firm’s premises on Friday evening to make a presentation to Mr. John O’Styke, who, after 23 years’ faithful service with the firm is leaving to take up a position in Auckland. Mr L. V. Brooks, in presenting Mr O’Styke on behalf of his fellow-members with a Loewe pipe, a pouch and a supply of tobacco, commented on his long service and his popularity among the staff and customers of the W.F.C.A. Mr O’Styke thanked them all for their generous gift and kind wishes, and hoped to return some day and renew their acquaintance. Mr O’Styke’s position has been filled by Mr J. Mabey, late of Konini.
