Winter Season Well Under Way

PROSPECTS FOR WANGANUI

(By “CARBINE.”)

The winter racing season is now well under way, and this week the first day of four big meetings will be run. Main interest will be centred round the Auckland Racing Club’s three day winter meeting at Ellerslie where the principal events will be the Great Northern Hurdles, Great Northern t Steeplechase, and the Cornwall Handicap. Well endowed with prize money this meeting will attract the best horses in the Dominion and some really good form should be displayed. The Dunedin Jockey Club will also stage a three-day fixture at Wingatui, and the Otago Steeplechase and Otago Hurdles will attract the cream of the South Island jumpers. While Napier Park and Wanganui are not quite so important as the above, they will draw their full quota of class horses, and the public should be treated to good day’s entertainment. Good fields have been entered for the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting to be held on June 3. The second day’s racing will take place on June 5. The big event on the attractive programme will be the Connolly Handicap of one mile and a quarter and some class horses will be seen in action. The other major event is the Grandstand Steeplechase Handicap of a distance of about two and a half miles. The fields are:— PURUA HACK HURDLES. One mile four furlongs and a quarter. Small Boy, 12.8; Disturbed, 11.1; Royal Choice, 10.10; Lustral, 10.2; Student Prince, 10.2; War Lap, Misurina, 9.7; Princess Isabel, 9.5; All Blood, 9.3; Professional, 9.2; Amoroso, Golden Memory, Hokumai, Ruadina, Parry, 9.0. Small Boy might find that the weight is too great, while Disturbed is not quite up to concert pitch. Royal Choice who won at his first attempt over the sticks at Manawatu gave a good exhibition of jumping, but was unfortunate to fall at Foxton. He is a game horse and no matter how hard the going, will fight to the finish. All Blood who ran second to Royal Choice is improving and should go well. Princess Isabel was behind at Manawatu but improved her position near home, jumping the last two fences nicely. Lustral will be handy while Student Prince should receive public support. The favourites might include

Student Prince. Royal Choice. All Blood. " RIVER HACK HANDICAP. One mile and a distance. Cuisinicr, 9.13; Brazil, 9.9; Rehearsal, 9.7; Rotoma, 8.11; Pretty Lass, 8.9; Ruling Star, Happy Heels, 8.8; Lucullus Boy, 8.7; Verey Lights, 8.6; Golden Flame, Windsor Chief, 8.4; Tom-Tom, 8.3; Dunmanway, Karere Nui, Sunbeam, The Ring, Selkirk. Floral Robe, Blettra, Warehi, Yecl Prior, Prinihia, Aurora’s Star, 8.0. Cuisiner scored a good win in the Te Awe Awe Handicap at Manawatu and although is carrying 9.13 should give a good account of himself. Brazil has also been running well and should also perform satisfactorily. Rehearsal is in winning form and should be with the leaders at the finish. Aurora’s Star scored a surprise win at Foxton and should be well supported. Lucullus Boy, Ruling Star and Happy Heels have impressed recently but the most support might come for

Cuisiner. Brazil. Rehearsal. CENTURY HURDLES HANDICAP. Two miles and 194 yards. Esteem, 11.0; Silver Sight, 10.13; Small Boy, 10.12; Airam, 10.10; Iddo, 10.5; Journet, 10.3; Silk Sox, 10.0; Erebus, 9.9; Disturbed, 9.2; Royal Choice, Don Erma, Redolent, Princess Isobcl. 9.0. Esteem was favourite in the Hamilton hurdle race but although he did not win his performance was encouraging and he will probably receive the public's support. If Small Boy does not ‘““start in the Purua hack hurdles he might be handy at the finish. Erebus scored a first and a second at Manawatu and is expected to run a good race. If the going is heavy Silk Sox ■ will give the top weight something to think about. He ran third to Erebus at Manawatu. Airam, Don Erma and Disturbed will also be well supported. Good form may be shown by Erebus. Esteem. Silk Sox. TRIAL HANDICAP. Six furlongs. Young Charles, 9.0; Snigger, 8.12: Parian, 8.12 Sang Bleu, 8.9; Gitana Lass. Lady Baron. 8.7; Carmody, Phil, Selkirk, Kaiwaka. Sieglinde. Desert Column, Gold Chain, Master Solway, Renascor. Gwenland, Vaals Queen, Penny Farthing. B.G. Young Charles, the top weight, is a good sprinter and should perform well. Strong opposition will probably come from Snigger who ran second in the Rangitane Plate at Manawatu. She was in a handy position a furlong from home and looked like pulling the event off but could not quite get there. Selkirk has not started many times this year. He has been in training since his outing at Easter and may be to the fore. The Masterton horse, Master Solway, and Parian should be handy

at the finish. Some who might find favour are

Young Charles. Snigger. Parian. GRANDSTAND STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP. About two miles and a half. Riotous, 11.3; Silver Sight, 10.10; Iddo, 10.4; Silk Sox,- 10.1; Sporting Song, 10.0; Lord Hereford, 9.12; Count Willonyx, Glenvane, 9.7; Lady Stella, 9.5; Master Hector, 9.4; Red Rufus, Cordon, Lactise, Redolent, Lady Callaghan, 9.0. After winning the Waikato Steeplechase Riotous must be seriously considered. Silver Sight is a good jumper but has not the staying qualifications that will be necessary in this event. Master Hector, who ran, second to John Charles in the Manawatu Steeplechase, was not followed up by the public but in view of his performance he will probably go to the barrier carrying a fair share of the money. Lord Hereford was placed fourth at Manawatu and with a few more races over the battens this horse will be among the favourites. Glenvane scored a runaway victory in the Whirokino Steeplechase at Foxton and should be well supported. If the going is soft he will be prominent. Others who might be handy are Iddo, Redolent and Sporting Song. However, those supported might be Riotous. Master Hector. Glenvane. CONNOLLY HANDICAP. One mile and a quarter. Lady Furst, 9.0; Siegmund, 8.9; Foxlove, 8.8; Play On, Master Cy.klon, 8.7; Entail, 8.6; Happy Landing, Homily, 8.3; Airam, 7.11; Sergia, 7.9; Mataroa, Silvanus, 7.8; Aussie Ra, Rustem, Royal Minstrel, Eastern Heir, Might Granvale, Prince. Rangi, Prince Colossus, Wananga, 7.7.

Lady Furst might find 9 stone too much, although her form has not been bad. Success did not come Siegmund’s way at Manawatu but as he is off and on there is a possibility he will come to light. Foxlove at the weight seems a good bet, while Rustem and Aussie Ra will be well supported. Rustem’s failure in the Foxton Cup was a surprise, as his form this season has been very impressive. Although Homily was not successful at Manawatu, her form indicates that she will not be long behind the front rankers. Although Royal Minstrel won the sprint at Foxton the mile and a quarter might prove too much. The main fancies may include Rustem. Foxlove. Aussie Ra. WINTER OATS. Six furlongs. Dungarvan, 9.13; Lord Cavendish, 9.5; Amigo, 9.4; Homily, 9.2; Taitoru, 8.10; Footloose, Aureus, 8.9; Triune, 8.8; Matoru, Lifeguard, 8.7; Hunting Blood, 8.5; Diamond Cutter, Corato, 8.2; Airing, Solaria, Deficit, Fiancee, 8.0. Two wins at Manawatu may make Lord Cavendish the favourite although Amigo and Homily, providing the latter does not contest the Connolly Handicap, will give him a close race. Aureus bagged a second at Palmerston North, and this mare’s form is rapidly improving. Diamond Cutter ran second to Lord Cavendish on the second day at Manawatu and looks a good thing at 8.5. Solaria has shown glimpses of returning to form, and will be supported by some. Public opinion might favour

Lord Cavendish. Diamond Cutter. Homily or Aureus. BOROUGH HACK HANDICAP. Six furlongs. * Lord Moutoa, 9.12; Rhodesian, 9.6; White Gold, 9.1; Pretty Lass, 8.11; Gold Chase, 8.9; Vadanoe, Native Song, 8.7; Golden Pam, 8.5; Stella Lux, 8.3; Dawn Star, Liberal Mint, 8.1; Maturity, Eurotas, Daisy Chain. Floral Robe, Captain Treville, GaiWind, Coronado, Haile Selassie, 8.0. The punters will have a headache trying to pick the winner of the last race, the Borough Hack Handicap. Rhodesian, winner of the Te Marae Handicap at Palmerston last week, is a form horse who should be well backed. Good form will probably be shown by Golden Pam. who is well suited to the distance and Vadanoe who has been displaying consistent form. Among the bottom weights Floral Robe. Captain Treville and Haile Selassie will be supported. The best form may be shown by Rhodesian. Golden Pam. Floral Robe. RACING FIXTURES .lune 3, s—Napier Park. June 3, s—Wanganui.
