Large Kingfish Caught.
While fishing in the Manukau Harbour oil' Kaitereki recently. Mr G. V. Preston, of Auckland, was surprised to get a very strong tug on his, Goz. schnapper line. The fish was not only a large one. but a good fighter also, and it was only after a two-hour struggle that it was eventually landed, when it was found to be a 401 b. kingfish. Mr Preston was fishing from a small dinghv, and realising that an attempt to pull the fish aboard would swamp the craft, he played the fish into the shallows close in to the shore, where lie put an end to its struggles witli a knife.
Sick Man’s Journey. A sick man was brought to Bluff on an evening last week from one of the mutton bird islands in a fishing launch, the Violet, owned by Mr A. Johnston. He was then taken by ambulance to the Southland Hospital. Considerable anxiety was experienced by those associated with him on the island when it was found necessary to remove him to the hospital (says the "Southland Times”), as there was no vessel immediately at their disposal. Fires were lighted near the shore to attract the attention of a craft which was sighted a good distance from the island, and after a brief, anxious period the signals were picked up and the skipper of the Violet agreed to bring the man to the mainland. "I see your daughter is back home again, old boy." "Yes. We found it too expensive having her living in a flat supporting herself."
