THE VEGETABLE GARDEN

PLENTY OF TIDYING UP. At the present time there will be a good deal of tidying up to do in the vegetable garden. All refuse of a soft nature should be collected to rot down into a useful compost for digging in later. Rhubarb and asparagus beds should be cleaned up, forked over and a top-dressing applied for the winter. It is especially important that the foliage of any plants which have, during the summer, been attacked by disease should be cleared at the earliest possible date. If left lying on the surface of the soil it is almost certain trouble will be experienced in future years. Diseased foliage of any description should not be rotted down for manure. Destruction by burning is the only safe course, and the earlier the better.
