CARNATION LAYERING
STILL VERY POPULAR. Carnation layering is still extensively practised, and gardeners no doubt, would stand by it as the best method. Yet there are many failures with the layering system with the choicer sorts. Cuttings inserted in sandy soil and then placed in a cold frame usually turn out very well with very few-fail-ures. This is a much easier method of increasing them and if one lives in a cold district they may be left in the frame until spring. In selecting cuttings take off strong, young, unflowered wood, approximately two inches long. Strip the leaves from the bottom half inch of stem and follow up by peeling off the skin from the stripped portion. For some reason the cuttings root much better when this is taken off.
