A mixed team from the Oreytown Club consisting of W and S Tnlly, A L Webster, A and C Ody, and O Humphries, of tbe first team, several of the second, and a couple of lads, played a team from the Papawai Natives on Saturday at Oreytown. C Udy kicked off ter Oreytown, and aome fast play ensued for some little time, O Humphries eventually getting a try after a severe struggle for Greytown. The Maoris played a good game throughout, although one or two of their team were rather rough. After the spell a very fast backwards and forwards game was played, each aide being narrowly prevented from scoring, Ooldamith, Tings, and C Faulkner playing a tall game [for their aide ; and S Tally, H Alloway, Webster, A Udy, and O Humphries lor Oreytown. After a aeries of packed scrimmages, and aome tough struggling Ooldamith managed to get over the line with the ball, but in being collared lost it, and then it became a question aa to whether a try was tbe result, aome footballera among the spectators declaring that it was a fair try and others avowing that Ooldamith lost the ball before it rolled over. At any rate the umpires declared against the try, and shortly alter the game concluded, resulting in favor of Oreytown by s try to nil. This may be said of tbe Natives, that with tbe little chance they have of learning the strict rules of tbe game, they displayed considerable skill and activity, and fought an exceedingly hard game. Some few explosions of temper ensued, but were promptly suppressed. -
