Damon and Pythias.
To tbe Editor of the Waitarapa Daily]
bin,—Thia is a cold world, yet there is one thing it believes in—the power of love. I"' warm affection we often observe sub wtiug between two artless hobbledehoys in tin springtime of their golden youth is enough to bring tbe dew of sentiment even to tbe eyt of a oynio. But when perfect fondness k discovered betwoon two elderly gtntleicen, whose locks are silvered and waistbands large, it is sufficient to make a wooden image weep. And yet, such tenderness unco existed between the bright particular Comet of tbe tVuirarapa and tbe Evening Btuiug of Web lington. These happy old gentlemen were loudly attached to one another. They— to In speak—wandered about this bleak and barren earth with their honest old arms twined round each other's innocent newts. Their gentle, amiable, humble heu.L beat in unison, tbey copied each other s lilt. l .* paragraphs, and “ Our Correspondents ' reports, backed the same Bunny—another artless ancient of the same kidney.-This was all a few brief days sgo—but now 1 Now all is ohsnged. The dear old gentlemen are quite unkind to one another, Tbe Comet umls (vide Wairarapa Comet, July 16) cruel words at the Evening Stump. And why ? Ahl thereby hangs a tale. Tbe Stump, in a moment ol mad pride, boasted that he bad a larger circulation in the Wairarapa than any of the local papers ! Mine illae lachrymae ! This was too cruel a stab to be borne ny the meek confiding Comet. Hit the Comet, vilify the Comet, kick the Comet down a flight . of stairs, but don't--if you value innocence ' and truth—don’t make nasty remarks abon. • his somewhat limited circulation. And now, alas 1 there is war between Damon and Pythias; the sword is drawn-the scabbard la hurled into space. Ah 1 well, 'tie art i’l wind—but tbe proverb’s somewhat musty. It seems, however, (the Comet and Stump having quarrelled) that the time approaoheth when honest men may get their own. 1 am, Sir, Ac-. XXX.
