Considerable anxiety was felt in the Wairarapa last night in the various townships neoause the train from Wellington did not arrive at the appointed time, and as the hours nas-ed the anxiety became alarm. Nor was t U"til one o'clock this morning that the s' vmd of the whistle gave any relief. From a pass tiger from Wellington we learn that the train horn thence arrived at Kaitoke at 7.20 last night, and os there appeared to be more than usual delay he was informed that a telephone message bad been received from the Summit etaiiug that tue luggage tram had oot arrived from Kaitoke, having inn into a slip, derailing the engine aud four or live trucks. About 20 men were at ouoe sent op the hue to render asaislauoe aud at 11 "'clock the passenger train followed Arriving at tile scene of the disaster the train from Mtslenon was found at the other side of the slip, it having been detains I at the hummit about four hours aud a half. A number of plauks were laid over tlie mud brought down by the slip aud the passengers were thus enabled to change train* aud so proceed on their journey. Had the accident happened to,the down passenger train theie would doubtUea have been a bad accident as tile Cram would barely have cleared the tunnel Tne engine ul the luggage train was half buried in the mud. The tram which returned with the passengers to the Wairarapa anived about 1 o'clock this morning at (ireytown. The whole of the delay waa caused by tbe red tape ayetem of tbe railway department. Nothing could be done uutil instructions had been giveu from the Wellington head quarters, it ia a scaudaloue shame that such a state ul things should exist, and it is to be feared that in additiou to this there will be a terrible accident on this line some of those days.
