PARLIAMENT.
REPRESENTATION PILL. In the Legislative Council on Tuesday night, although the Government were averse to it being pushed on, tbe Representation Bill was passed, tho Hon Dr Pollen taking charge of it. THE NEW DUTIES REPEALED. In tbe House of Representatives, Sir Julius Vogel moved a resolution rescinding the resolution authorising the collection of the duties under tbe proposed new tariff. The motion was agreed to. THE POLITICAL STRUGGLE. The Hon Major Atkinson, in a sharp speech, moved " That a respectful address he presented to His Excellency the Governor, informing him that in tbe opinion of this Honse, the election of members to the next Parliament should take place under the Representation Bill now before Parliament, and that tbe new Parliament should be convened for the despatch of business not later than tbe first day of September next, and that the expression of this opinion be an instruction to the Government to act in accordance therewith.” The Premier replied in very warm terms, in the comae of which he said the whole of the opposition to the Government had been got up and carried on by the large land holders, who had been indefatigable in lobby ing for tbe defeat of the graduated property tax, and the Land Acquisition Bill.
