MATARAWA v. GREYTOWN FIRE BRIGADE.

This mit< li took place at the Greytown Reserve, oo Saturday afternoon, and much interest was taken in the tussle, although a thick drizzling rain was falling neatly all the time. The struggle commenced by iB Ddy, one of the half backs kicking off the ball for Matavawa toward the western goa,, ’’o initiat>>ry kick was a good one and the tin men’s team would have boon nowhere but for tii ■ activity of C Beard, S and W Tally, and Goldsnii** l, although some of the other mem* hers of the Brlgau' team did some fair work. After a series of scrimmages 0 Udy managed to cross the line and secure a try for the Matarawa men. who were playing well, but were at a disadvantage through not having had much concerted practice. R Otlgg, after a few good tushec were made by B Udy, gut hold of the leather and slipped by bis pursuers and secured a try for the Greytown side The Matarawa men then bad a good tussle for n issnssioo but no further progress was made until half time was called. After another closely nicked scrimmage B Udy made a good pot at goal and narrowly mined scoring; the leather

was dow in dangerous proximity to the Qreytown goal line, but W Tally and Goldsmith played a good dribbling game, which C Beard was not slow to follow up and then the position of Qreytown looked smilingly well; but £ Udy made a series of gigantic rushes which 8 Tally and Goldsmith promptly intercepted. E Udy received the ball out of the scrimmages by some dexterous passing by the elder Gallon who was the tight man in the right place, and E Udy through hie instrumentality ultimately got a good clean try for Matarawa. The kick (or goal did nut increase the score, and after this W Tally saved bis side by some good return kicks and several kicks into touch cleverly executed, Goldsmith is the oomiug man evidently of the season and he plays at present a grand game, he dribbled well but was to anxious. C Udy took the ball well out of the scrimmages upon several occasions and 0 Beard for Greytowo worked like a Trojan. Archie Manihera for Qreytown and Coleman for Matarawa played well, so also did T Bay well. Alloway and J Gallon for Matarawa. No more scoring was done and the game resulted in favor of Matarawa by 2 tries to 1. A Udy was umpire for Matarawa, T WiLtsringhuu for Greytown and J Tooker referee.

The team to play Oriental Club (Wellington), tomorrow, will be picked from the following players W and J Judd, H Tully, A McMuster, L Knell. J Maguire, G Hawke, E Humphries, AWakolin, H and 1) Udy, U Wood, T Haigh, L 8t George, K Grigg, C Varnham.G York, Kutoi Archie, After this match the first team will play all comers. CABTEKTON v. MABTEBTON.

A good football match was played last Saturday at Carterton, between the first fifteens, and resulted in a draw, neither side scoring. Both sides played well, although there was much off side play. Baamber, F. Fairbrother, Nicholson, and Lueena showed up well for Carterton, and Hounslow, C. and W. Perry, and Ellers for Masterton. Mr W. J. Nix umpired for Carterton, and Mr W. McKenzie for Mastertou ; Mr W. Knell was referee. It was a grandly contested match, Mastertou being several times forced down by their opponents.
