Shocking Accident.
Invercargill, Wednesday. The details of the running down of a herd of cattle on the Bluff line last ’Thursday show that the occurrence was of a shooting character. The train overtook seven head ofcattle in daylight, near a rock bound cutting, the consequence being that the entire herd, which were the property of a widow were killed or injured, a space of 13 chains iqtervou, iug between the first and the last knocked down, When the train stopped, one of tlie animals was jammed by the legs in the cow-catcher, and it is stated that the driver hacked through the limbs with a small arc above where they were broken. The Society' for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has the matter in hand, There is a slight incline in the cutting, but trains frequently stop on it for traffic purposes. The line is not fenced for miles, although a public road runs parallel and close to it.
