Greytown Winter Entertainments.

The first oi a series of entertainments in aid of a (and for the purchase of a suitable fire engine for the use of the Fite Brigade took place at the Town Hall, Greytcwn. on Monday night. The proceedings were initiated ly a torchlight procession headed by the Brass Band. The Fire Brigade tamed oat in full force and the night being suitable the torches lent a very pleasing effect to the surroundings ; the engine and horse reel were handsomely decorated with flags and a suitable banner—the decoration being chiefly the work of Fireman A. Gardener. The first event was arranged by Messrs R. J. Thompson and W. G. Nation, and was very well attended by the public, who are evidently bent upon making some substaulial acknowledgement this winter season to the valuable services recently rendered to the town upou several occasions by the Fire Brigade, and intend by their sixpences to assist that body to obtain some suitable apparatus to work with if such emergencies again occur. Unfortunately for the vocal success of the first concert the gentlemen singers, some of wham re- ■Jed at ft distance, w;-ic tumble tor it.;h U.dftv.c;,! i wi •itber mid o'.ba causes to be present.; but although this put of

Mrs Iliuno, wi,h Miss Bowler’s accompaniments, s.iug some excellent songs, which were much applauded hy the audience, and Air G. M. Gardener, of 0( rtertou, rendered an excel lent recitation " In the Old Canteen,” which fairly brought down the house, and be was compelled to reappear, then giving “ The Baby in Church,” which was equally as well received. Mr* Moffitt’s reuditiou of " Mary, Queen of Scots ” was equally as successful, that lady proving that she was au elocutionist of real merit. She was warmly encored, and iu response recited “ The Chiettaiu’s Son.” The Orchestral Baud which played the overture did nut reappear, which was a great disappointment to some. Mr W. C. Nation gave some good readings, and Miss M. Cotter sang some pretty selections in a very sweet and even voice. Mr G. U. Gardener by special request re-appeared and gave 11 £e« calmed ” with the same success as bis former recitations. Taking all matters together the audience, which was a very attentive and appreciative one, must have been thoroughly gratified with their c..lattainment. The comic element unforlun ihd.v was absent, but Messrs Wyett and 3i tu-,. n e have promised us an excellent and vani I programme upon (benext occasion (next Monday), and it is to be hoped for the sake not only of the valuable instiiution to be tenet!tied, bus also for the benefit of the town itself, that those Monday evening relaxations will continue to be well attended by all residents having the advancement of the Borough at heart.
