LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. WEDNESDAY. TAXING nOBBE RACING. Hou R. Hart moved that in the opinion of this Council horse racing and its accessories should, for revenue purposes, be made subject to taxation. After some discussion the motion was lost. COUNTIES ACT AMENDMENT BILL. The Counties Act Amendment Bill wae further considered in committee, and eventually reported without amendment. The Bill wae then read a third time, and passed. RABBIT PEST. Hon Colonial Secretary moved that a Select Committee be appointed to inquire into the best means of dealing with the rabbit pest; with power to confer or sit with any similar committee appointed by the House of Representatives, and to agree to a joint or separate report; to report within one month ; the committee to consist of Hon Mr Acklsnd, Hon Mr Holmes, Hon Mr G R Johnson, Hon Mr Menzies, Hou Mr Peter, Hou Mr Robinson, Hon Mr Beeves, Hon Mr Walker, Hon Mr Wilson, and the mover. Agreed to.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. TUESDAY. UNCLAIMED BEPOSITa. Mr O’Gallsgbau asked tbe Government whether they intend this session to introduce a Bill to provide for investment in the Public Trustee of unclaimed deposits. The Treasurer said it was a very large question, and he did not feel himself able to deal with it this session. He would give the matter further consideration. PASTORAL DEFERRED PAYMENT LICENSES. Mr Reid asked the Government if they in* tend this session to introduce a Bill to amend “ Tbe Laud Act, 1885,” so as to enable holders of pastoral deferred payment licenses to exchange such licenses for leases of small grazing runs. The Minister of Lands said be proposed to bring in a Bill to deal with the matter. PETONC RAILWAY STATION. Mr Fitzherbert asked the Minister for Pub lie Works if it is his intention to have the Petone railway station enlarged, eo aa to give sufficient accommodation to tbe increased population of that district. The Minister said it was proposed to rebuild the station and re.arrange it altogether for the convenience of the public and the service. GAS FOB TUB BUTT AND PETONE. Mr Fitzherbert presented a petition from the Wellington Gas Company, praying for leave to bring in a Bill to extend tbe operation of the Wellington Gas Company to the Hutt aud Petone. The Bill was introduced and read a first time. RABBIT EXTERMINATION. Mr Fisher asked the Minister of Lands whether the Government will place ou tbe Estimates a sum of £IOO for the purpose of publicly and practically testing Williams’s rabbit exterminator in some rabbit-infested district ? The Minister said it would not be fair to grant tbe subsidy asked for. Mr Williams had taken out a patent for bis invention, and if it effected the purpose he should make a fortune by it CAPITATION ALLOWANCE TO FIRE BRIGADES. Mr Guinness asked the Government whether they will introduce a measure during the present session to provide for the incorporation and enrolment of volunteer fire brigades, and for the payment of an annual capitation allowance to efficient volunteer firemen. The Premier said the Government had no objection, but they bad not the means to provide for capitation. They left that to tbe local bodies.
