Schuabell, the French Commissioner, who was released from Metis by the Emperor of Germany’s orders, arrived in Paris today, and met with an ovation from the crowd assembled at Porte a’Manson. April 30. Copious cold rains have fallen, and the harvest is backward. New Zealand mutton is selling at 4£J per lb on the Smithfield Market; Australian beet tallow is 6d lower, 22s ; and Australian mutton tallow, Gd lower, 235. Wheat —Market firmer; English slightly advanced ; foreign unchanged. Supplies are moderate. The Russian loan has been largely subscribed May 1, Mr Parnell proposes to retire from the leadership of the Irish party on the ground of ill health. Some excitement has been caused by a fresh report that General Gordon is not dead. Jt is now stated that a British soldier who resembled Gordon wms mistaken for him and killed. The Standard reports that three steamers are constantly crossing the Caspian Sea with Russian troops fur Persia and Afghanistan. May 2 The Canadian Government offer a subsidy of 200,000 dollars for a mail service to Australia. Seven of the regicides, whoso trial has just concluded at St Petersburg, bave been sentenced to dealt, and the remainder to penal servitude for life Some excitement has been caused by the report that five Russian men-of-war have sailed from the Baltic for the Pacific. A bitter feeling still continues amongst the frontier residents, who fear that war between Franco and Germany is inevitable. A state of siege has been proclaimed in Alsace and Lorraine. France has been warned to stop the system of espionage now carried on, on the ground that it foments treason among the inhabitants of Reichsland. The reporku agreement between Russia and England with respect to the control of Afghan affairs, in the event of the overthrow of the Ameer, is ridiculed in India. M ews has been received from the Island of Crete that serious disturbances have occurred between the Christian and Mohammedan population, owing to the abduction of a Christian girl by the Turks. In the fighting which has taken place several persons have been killed on both sides. Sydxey, April 30. Wheat is selling at from 3s 3d to 3s 9d per bushel; oats, Is 9d to 3s 4d ; maize, per 561b, 3s lOd. May 3. Deeble has arranged for a series of contests between the principal scullers of the world, to take place on the Parramatta River during January i next. The first prize will be £7OO, wiih others in proportion. I
