featherston Road Board.

The adjourned ordinary meeting of thia Board was held ou Saturday. Present — J TuJly, t’sq (chairman), Messrs Matthews, Moncktou, Klgar, Bid will, Cowman, and Harris. The license for tramway applied for by Mr W Burt was granted, no objections being received. Mr King reported further re the bridge at Kahautara, that he has made a surrey of the new road line required at the lower site , the length would be from the bend to the new road line chains and the length ot road, 75 chains. The same objection applies to the upper and lower sites as to protectire works. The advantages to the upper site are that the road would be shorter and is already acquired and made. The advantages to the lower site are more stable banks, and higher ground on each side for the approaches. Upon discussion it was resolved that the matter stand over until the Warden for the district is present. Mr Sheet reported re the platform, and it waa resolved that tenders be invited for the removal of Platform and making road, for next meeting. The Clerk was instructed to call Mr Cotter’s attention to timber lying on the County road, and request him to remove it at once A letter was read from Mr Coleman Phillips offering the Board one acre of land at £lO, the Board to fence same.

Mr Dowman thought the building should be retained for the use of the road men, as it was required, to replace the one recently burnt down It was pointed out that a new whare could be erected for about £ls. Mr Dowman moved, That the building be not sniff. Mr Biilwill moved and Mr Matthews seconded, fh.it Mr Lawrie's offer be accepted, and a new whare be erected on the acre owned by the Board. On being put to the meeting Mr Dowman s motion was declared carried, three voting for and two against. Mr Lawrie was granted permission to occupy tbe building until he could erect another, providing accommodation is given tbe roadmen if required. Mr Bidwill's motion re striking a rate of 5 bths of a penny for the ensuing year was seconded by Mr Blgar.

Mr Harris moved as an amendment, Mr Dowman seconded, that tbe rate be one half-penny. It was generally felt that had the toll been retained a lower rate than &-Sths may have met the requirements for the year, but in view of the expense of the deviation it was not possible to make a less amount do. Mr Harris’ amendment on being put was declared lust. The original motion was therefore carried A long discussion ensued on the

Mr Dowman moved, and Mr Harris seconded pro forma that the scale be adopted, with the exception that No I sub district be only reduced to £ls. Mr Harris and the chairman thought their wards were too heavilv handicapped It was pointed out that the new tariff would not affect ratepayers so heavily as the toll. Be Cross’ Creek Boad The Clerk was instructed to inform Mr Cross it will be necessary for him to erect a gate, and to request Mr Wilkinson to erect a gate in lieu of the present slip panels, and ais .> to request Mr Skeet to prepare for further works to open the road at once.
