The Late Allan Herd.
Allan Herd, the rider of Freebooter at the late Nelson races, who was thrown from his horse on Friday, died from the effects of bis injuries. The deceased has been a very successful hurdle race jockey for the last few years, and his mounts were always largely backed by bis Wairarapa friends, as he has steered many a local jumper to victory. An inquest was held at Richmond, when Alfred Shearsby gave evidence to the effect that he was riding Orient a little in front of Freebooter, when Herd called out, and witness, looking round, saw him falling. Before the race he said be was not well and that his neck was bad through a spill ho had in the Walrarapa. Robert Kingan who was riding behind, saw Herd fall on the back ot his head and neck. He held by the reins for five or six yards and then came against a post. Dr Creasy said the cause of death was compresaion of the brain and spinal cord. A verdict in accordance was given.
