Tauherenikau School Picnic.
The Tauherenikan school children’* picnie took place at the Tauherenikan racecourse last Wednesday. All the children attending the school were present, and many game* ol a most amusing character were indulged in. Some good prizes were given lot foot races, which were well contested. During tne winter months several concerts were metitn. ted for the purpose ol providing prizes lot the scholars and the net results of tbeee entertainment* brought in a handsome amount for the purpose, home and substantial prizes were purchased m Wellington in the shape of hooks, worn boxes, writing desks, Ac., and they were presented to the successful scholars m eaon of the standards on Wednesday. Mrs Heanay the schoolmistress, has been very energetic in her endeavours to push the children lor. wud in their education, and she deserve* tne •he thanks ol the district lor her untiring zeal. Mr Merlet, the French Master at the Wellington College happened to be present on a visit, and kindly presented the prizes with some good wholesome advice to the recipient*. Many of the friend* of the children, including the local committee, were present at the picnic, and refreshment* were liberally enp. plied under the shade ol the tree* in the bush. After having thoroughly enjoyed tbemselvee the company separated lor their homes in tbs evening quite delighted with their d*y ■ outing, the juveniles before diaper* lll #* giving three cheeia tor their teacher. Amoug the amusements during the afternoon, wat e good cricket match, [elder boy* and their fathers against all corners. Hom« of tue rising generation in this locality are becoming most expert at the game of cricket, and will prohat ly ere long become good haudl at the g&me.
