Volunteering.
On Tuesday next the first inspection parade ol the Greytown Rifle Volunteers takes place at the Town Hall. Every member is required to attend. The first inspection for the year of the Featherston Rilies takes place on Monday night, and the Papa wai Rifles will parade for inspection at 2 p.m. on Tuesday The Commanding Officers of the several Volunteer Rifle Companies in the valley are contemplating challenging four of the senior corps iu Wellington to a rifle match shortly. This should be an important event and will be of much interest to all Wairarapa marksmen. The companies to be challenged are the Guards, Artillery, Navals and City Rifles. On New Year’s Day the Featherston Hides fired the second competition tor Major Bunny's prize, a handsome clocK, wit b the following result ; —Vol Tocker 49 points, first, Lieut Smith 4fi, second. At the first competition Vol Whiteman was first with 60 points and Vol Tocker second with 51 points. Owing to some misunderstanding as to the number of competitors required to win this trophy, it will probably be fired for again before it becomes the property of any com.petitor. A general meeting of the Featherston Rities will be held on the evening of the Bth inst.
