Violent Earthquake Shocks at Taupo.

The Postmaster General received the following telegram from the postmaster at Tanpo ;—“ On Thursday night at 8 9 p.m.. two violent shocks of earthquake occurred here, following in quick snooessiou, travelling apparently from S.W. to N.E>. They are severely felt at the south end of the lake. At Rotorua last night we saw volcanic fire in the direction of Rocomahana. An immense glow would suddenly appear for a few minutes from 10 30 to 11.10 pm. The night was calm, clear, frosty. No sign of activity in volcano south of us.— C. J. Nobton.
