London, October 8. The first heat of the Welsh Harp International Handicap was rowed on the Hendon Lake to-day, when Wallace Boss and Perkins beat Nelson, who is consequently out of the final heats. It is stated that 250 recidivistes will embark for New Caledonia on 31st October. The shipment of fruit from Australia is highly spoken of by the Prince of Wales, and the whole cargo has arrived in splendid condition except the passion fruit. New Zealand mutton is selling at from 4J to 4Jd. Beef tallow, 23s ; mutton tallow, 25s fid. From the trial of colonial woods, Messrs Bausome report that iron bark and mountain ash are the best woods iu New South Wales, blackwood in Victoria, and in Western Australia jarrah. They consider that many of the New Zealand woods are eminently suitable for the English market. October 9.
