Cricket.

It is earnestly hoped that the crioketera of Greytown will make an effort to render the procession and costume match on Saturday worthy of themselves. A little thought and perhaps a little trouble is all that are requited to get a dress representing some character. If the suggestion is not taken up heartily by the whole club it bad better be left alone, for to see a band in front of a procession of men with about half a dozen fancy dresses will look ridiculous. We speak thus because we find upon enquiry that one or two “ don’t see the good of it.” Of course it is too much trouble. We, however, believe that the turn out will be an attractive one and a credit to the club, for we hear that several members are having dresses made.

The Greytown cricketers are attending to practice very persistently. Wo doubt the splendid three-sided net which the club have in their possession, is an attraction, inasmuch as it saves a lot of hard work in fielding when there are only a few at practice. Inducements are held out this year in the shape of bats for the fifst and second elevens for the best batting and bowling analysis in each team. The subscription is 10s ; under 18 years of age, ss; and boys may be nomina* ted by the committee, free. We understand that the colors will soon be ready, consisting of blue and white ribbon on a white hat, and blue and white sash, the uniform of course bring white, as usual, and which the committee tiust members will wear, and all appear uniformly attired in matches. Hie club is endeavoring to arrange for the purchase of a lawn mower as soon as the funds will allow. Visitors are welcome to join in the practices, which are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, especially those from a distance. The local team is in hopes of receiving a number of challenges from the Wellington clubs this season. This afternoon the ground should be rolled, and a wicket prepared for Saturday. Mr Riley, the proprietor of the Wellington Post-office Hotel, has offered a 25 guinea cup, to be competed for amongst the Wellington clubs, the cup to become the property of the highest scorer at the end of the season. The following cricketers are mentioned as a representative eleven of New Zealand to play the Australian team Ford and Cooke of Nelson; W J Cotterill, Dunlop, Fowke, and either Wilding or Barnes of Canterbury; Barton, Arneil, and Tates or Meldrnm of Auckland ; Blacklock of Wellington ; and Dixon or Austin, from Otago.

The visit of tbe Australian cricketers to England has not been a financial success.
