Sending the Hat Round.

An effort is being made to get up a supsoription ib the Australian Colonies and New Zealand, for the purpose of presenting a momento to the Prince of Wales for his sup* posed services in connection with the Indian and Cobnial Exhibition. Our Colonial Secretary, the Hon P. A. Buckley, sent a circular to the Mayor of Wellington en the subject, wking him " to send the hat round ’’ and get in subscriptions. Probably, a similar litter has been sent to all (the Mayors thronghcut the colony. The Wellington Mayor aad Councillors didn’t see it, They wouldn’t subscribe a red cent lor such a purpose. And we fancy that the colonists generally will have nothing to do with this “ Prince of Wales memento ” business. In Melbourns and Sydney the affair is ridiculed and laughed to death. The thing must have been got up by some slavish lickspittle fellow, who wanted to bow down and curry favor with Royalty. We don't know that the Prince of Wales rendered any particular service in connection with the Indian and Colonial Exhibition ; and we do know that the colonists will not subscribe to any such a project as this “ momento ” business.
