Greytown Borough Council

This Council held its usual monthly meeting at the Borough Chambers last night. Present—His Worship the Mayor (P H Wood, Esq ), Crs Cotter, Trotter, Varnham, Mazton and St George. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

The returning officer reported the election of Messrs C Fabian, St George and H Udy, jun., as members of the Borough Counci. A letter was read from the Col Secretary re testimonials to the Prince of Wales.

On the motion of Or Cotter seconded by Cr Mazton the letter was allowed to lie oa the table.

Mr W C Nation’s proposals re printing and advertising was agreed to. The Works Committee’s report was read, including two tenders for work to be done on Cotter and Hirschberg Streets and adopted. The Finance Committee’s report was adopted as read. His Worship the Mayor reported that the Committee had considered the matter of the land north of Qreytown and proposed that a reply be forwarded to the Crown Lands Office asking for a statement shewing for what the compensation to Mr Gallagher is lor, as thd Council cannot find ont where the improvements are that are estimated at £34 ; also to point ont that the present ooonpiers have had the free nae of the laud lor a considerable number of years Carried.

Mr R J Thompson submitted a plan of shop he proposes to build on section 40 (next the Club). Approved of Cr Cotter proposed that it be an instruction to the Town Clerk that in all works let by contract there be written specifications, such specifications to be signed by contractor, and a deposit made for contracts over £lO, a copy of the specifications to be left at a public place if the Town Clerk should happen to be away. Seconded by Cr St George and carried

Cr Cotter proposed and Cr St George seconded that the tender of Messrs Burgess Bros, for formation and metalling 5 chains Hirsohberg Street be accepted. Motion lost. Cr Cotter proposed and Cr Maxton seconded that the Council expend the snm of £4 in putting in a drain in Great Frederiod Street. Carried

Cr St George proposed, and Cr Cotter seconded, that the Works Committee be requested to inspect works required in West Street by Mr Young, aud report at next meeting.
